BIRTHSTONES

The allocation of a stone to each month of the year rose from the influences of astrology, the zodiac in particular, and also the gems representing the twelve apostles. It is also believes that originally the stone would be worn during its month and then replaced by the next month's stone, rather than the birth month stone being worn all year.
